FDA testing on Jerky Treats

Sudan Thixton a pet food advocate. Who writes for TruthaboutPetFood.com on March 5, 2012 wrote an article on information that she was able to obtain from the FDA in regards to the testing being conducted on Jerky Treats.

The FDA started testing jerky treats in 2007. From 2007 to November of 2011 there were 353 reported illness or death's believed to be related to jerky treats. Since mid-November to the present that number has almost doubled to 596 cases. What has the FDA been doing?

From 134 samples tested in 2007 they from Vitamin D toxicity, to propylene glycol, to melamine and four samples tested positive for propylene glycol. In 2008 to 2010 pet reported illnesses decreased so only 23 samples were tested with no results. In 2011 pet illnesses rose again making national headlines and the FDA tested 84 samples. 64 segments tested for Salmonella. It is not common for Salmonella to cause the Fanconi-like symptoms that are being seen in sick dogs.

In 2012 the FDA has tested 130 samples so far. At this time all results are pending. Fifty-eight of the samples are being tested for metals and/or organic compounds. Seventy-two samples are being tested for DNA analysis

Always look at your pets food and/or treats packaging when you don't know the country of manufacture or the country of origin of ingredients.
