10 Plants That Are Poisonious To Dogs

Below find a list of 10 popular plants that are poisonous to dogs, you can get a full listing at ASPCA.org.

1)  Grapes-toxin can leads to kidney failure.

2) Mushrooms-as most dogs can not differentiate between poisonous and not do not allow them to consume any unless you are confident in identifying the species.  Amanita, Galerina and Lepiota species are especially dangerous because the toxins that they carry can cause a series of worsening symptoms, from vomiting to swelling in the brain. Amanita phalloides, the Death Cap mushroom, is responsible for most of the reported fatal mushroom poisoning cases in dogs.

3)  Marijuana-slows the heart rate, lack of coordination, disorientation, drooling and tremors that can last for up to three days.

4) Lilies-The peace lily, calla lily, amaryllis, lily of the valley, autumn crocus and the common houseplant, giant Dracaena or palm lily, are all dangerous to dogs. Ingestion of these can cause gastrointestinal upset, depression, anorexia and tremors.

5)  Black walnuts-as they decompose they grow molds that cause tremors and seizures.

6)  Sago Palm-the whole plant is dangerous especially the seeds.  The seeds contain toxins called cysasssin even if a dog ingests a single seed they need immediate medical attention.

Canine Influenza Virus (CIV)

Canine Influenza Virus is a viral cause of Kennel Cough.  Kennel Cough can be both bacterial and viral.  This is a highly contagious respiratory disease which is relatively new so all canines are at risk.  This virus can be transmitted by aerosols, droplets and direct contact with respiratory secretions.   Although the virus does not survive for a long time in the environment it is spread easily when in close proximity to infectious dog.

Symptoms of canine influenza virus include:
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Variable fever
  • Clear nasal discharge that progresses to thick, yellowish-green mucus
  • Rapid/difficult breathing
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lethargy
Since CIV is a viral disease there is no antiviral medication veterinarians will advise the appropriate supportive care and care needed to treat any secondary symptoms.  A few examples are:
  • Good nutrition and supplements to raise immunity
  • A warm, quiet and comfortable spot to rest
  • Medications to treat secondary bacterial infections
  • Intravenous fluids to maintain hydration
  • Workup and treatment for pneumonia
Canines need to wait 10-30 days for the virus to run it's coarse, while watching for secondary symptoms like pneumonia.  Dogs are contagious 10 days before signs are visible and you should isolate your dog from others right away, wash hands thoroughly after touching and even wear gloves to clean infected crates. This virus is not transmittable to humans, but humans can carry the germs on their hands, clothing and etc.
